Legal Studies Information Night with Nicholas Cowdery
The LSA invites members to Information Night One, 2025. It is an evening with Nicholas Cowdery (AO, KC), former NSW Director of Public Prosecutions. Nick will present a paper examining progress since the introduction of voluntary assisted dying laws which came into effect in in NSW in November 2023.
Presenter
Nicholas Cowdery AM QC has spent 50 years in criminal justice in various capacities. He has been a public defender, a barrister, an acting Judge and for 16 ½ years was Director of Public Prosecutions for NSW. He is a former President of the International Association of Prosecutors, chairs its Senate and is involved in its international projects. He is an Adjunct Professor of Law and a Visiting Professorial Fellow at several universities, teaches courses in criminal justice and is involved in research projects. He has had a strong connection with the protection and promotion of human rights, especially in the criminal justice context, and was founding Co-Chair of the Human Rights Institute of the International Bar Association from 1995-2000. He has received a number of domestic and international awards. He is a member of the National Human Rights Committee of the Law Council of Australia and the Criminal Law Committee of the NSW Bar Association. He campaigns for criminal law reform in several areas (abortion, voluntary assisted dying, drug law reform, Aboriginal incarceration and a bill of rights for Australia). He is the author of “Getting Justice Wrong: Myths, Media and Crime” (Allen & Unwin, 2001). Nick is a Life member of the Legal Studies Association of NSW.
